It started innocently enough. Steele & Samantha found a soft-shell turtle in our river about the size of a quarter so we decided to make a home for it in an aquarium in the boys' room. Then we found another one to keep him company. I think they are related. When we discovered they ate flies, Sterling always kept a fly-swatter at hand swinging constantly. Later, while moving the greenhouse, I caught a gecko hiding between some bricks and then Sterling captured 3 more. A lizard was next, treed by Sierra's dog, Skye at Granny's house. Two more lizards soon followed. Nothing with a green tail is safe around us anymore. Sterling started going to the river with a bucket & a net to see what he can add to his collection. He came back with perch, minnows, bass, shrimp, crawdads, snails & something we have yet to identify. If he goes down there often enough we can open a cajun restaurant. He currently has 1 aquarium, with fish, turtles & crawdads, in which he uses fresh rainwater, & 3 terrariums, one with a Chinese water dragon (purchased at Petsmart), one with 3 fence lizards, who get along great together (if staring at each other all day while crickets crawl all over them is "getting along") & one with 10 river frogs & 4 geckos. Now we are constantly on the lookout for bugs & flies to feed our rainforest zoo. The beauty & uniqueness that God has given each creature is amazing. Sterling says there are more to come!
